It has been really easy going for the last day and a half. If I had one wish, it would be more wind and more boat speed. From what I can see, that is on its way, so I spent the morning configuring the sails to take advantage. I rigged us up wing-on-wing, which is using the main sail and supporting the headsail with a pole. That lets you grab a lot of sail area when you intend to sail close to directly downwind. Downwind is exactly where we need to go, and I can adjust as the wind builds. Currently sitting at ten to twelve knots of wind.
Some folks have asked why I have routed so far offshore. Just south of Eureka there is an underwater ridge that goes from three thousand feet up to three hundred. It can stack up huge seas. A fifty-eight-foot sailboat went down there fairly recently. So the plan is to stay wide on that and, once past, take a more direct line toward Ensenada.
